Many fun and fascinating local museums are free or have periodic free days. Start with two across the street from the University Park campus, and one only a few blocks away. We’ve included links to their apps so you can see what special events and exhibits are scheduled.
Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA)
5905 Wilshire Boulevard, Los Angeles
A giant ‘floating’ rock! Rows of antique street lights! And a world-class modern art collection. Located on the Miracle Mile, LACMA is free the second Tuesday of each month and select holidays and after 3pm Monday—Friday for LA County residents.
Natural History Museum
Exposition Park, across the street from the University Park campus
Dinosaurs, animal dioramas, gems and minerals and local history. With 35 million objects, you could spend months exploring it. Free the first Tuesday of every month except July and August.
California African American Museum
Exposition Park, right across the street from the University Park campus!
Collects, preserves and displays African American history, art and culture. Admission is free, but there is a $12 parking fee.
The Huntington Library, Art Collections, and Botanical Gardens
1151 Oxford Road, San Marino
European masterpieces, a Gutenberg Bible, and beautifully landscaped grounds. Free the first Thursday of every month with an advance ticket.
10899 Wilshire Blvd. Los Angeles
Themed showings of modern art, photography and design. Plus, it showcases underrepresented artists from around the world, resulting in fascinating exhibitions. Admission is free daily.
